PRExcellence Awards

Sunday, November 9th
2-2:45 pm

Margaret Hatanaka introduces award winners!

This was Margaret's program so she may have more to say. I wanted to say GREAT job Margaret!

From an "outsider" I was so impressed with the quality of the award winners and thought it was such a shame that more libraries did not see what beautiful marketing like this (and what Carol does) can do for their libraries.

GREAT program! I was there to be time keeper and was treated with a GREAT program!

I wish someone could thinkof a really catchy name to let people know this a great place to get ideas!

PRExcellence on CLA

Camarillo - The Great Game
Was a high quality video that shot a tween/teen program, whcih was a very involved scavenger hunt. So fun to see all the teens! The teen libarian was great - "If you are caught running or yelling, you will lose points" - how Harry Potter!

Santa Clara - Sustainable U
I particularly liked a display they created out of trash/recycled materials - making it looks like fruits and vegetables (tying in to urban farmeing).

Sacramento - Poe

This was definitely the show stopper! They did not mention any grant in conjunction with their Poe celebration (not sure if it was Big Read?). Some of the very cool ideas - working with a local brewery to make an "Edgar Allen Porter", advertising on Poe drink coasters, bus shelters, they created a Poe anthology "The Slender Poe", and a wrap on their vehicles.

Laura Koivunen was their mastermind as a full time graphic artist (I think) for Sacramento. She seems like a good name to remember when looking for PR tips.

  1. This was my first time organizing a program for CLA. It was especially challenging because it involved 7 different speakers from all different libraries on one panel. Each presenter had the opportunity to speak about their award winning projects. I was worried about the presentation because 2 of the presenters had videos to show and I had nightmares about having technical issues. Overall, it went fairly smooth, except that we did go over our 45 min. timeframe. Thank you Angelica and Wess for taking care of the program while I ran out to make it to my 3pm program!
This being my last year as the PRExcellence Chair, I was proud of this program and felt like I did accomplish some of the goals I had set for myself when I had accepted the position - increasing the number of PRExcellence award submissions - went from 12 to 39 during my two year stint and increasing the visibility of the PR and Marketing Interest Group - by hosting a Spring Fling program and CLA program.
